A parents guide to a stress free hair cut

Thursday, June 11, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

No matter what the reason, whether your child does not like to get their haircut or you are thinking about getting your baby's first haircut your first step should be to come to Cookie Cutters Haircuts For Kids where haircuts are fun!

All of our stylist are well trained to deal with nervous or scared children. Many children do good for their first haircut but the closer they get to age two the more likely it is they will not always be willing to sit down. Either the child is afraid of getting their haircut or they just do not like sitting for any length of time.

Just remember your child will not be the first to cry. Do not be embarrassed. There are some days at Cookie Cutters where it seems like no child wants their haircut and we do not mind working with the child through the experience.  Also remember as adults we all know that it does not hurt to get your haircut, but a small child does not know this.

At Cookie Cutters we are prepared for children that have the wiggles or can't stop crying. We have televisions at all stations and will try to find their favorite program. We also have bubbles to play with while they get their hair cut. These things usually work at distracting and calming the child, but even if these distractions don't work we will get the haircuts done with your help.

Don't forget to come prepared. It is a good idea to bring toys or snacks for your child. Crackers, cereal, suckers, fruit snacks seem to work great. This will keep your child occupied and keep their mind off of what the stylist is doing.

It is a great idea to bring an extra shirt for your child. Most children do not like to keep the cape on while they get their haircut. If they do keep the cape on they can still feel itchy after the haircut and this can make their experience even less enjoyable.

After the haircut your child can get their balloon and go on the slide where all of their worries will disappear!

Don't worry this stage will soon pass. One day they will surprise you and love to get their haircut. Then don't be surprised if they cry when it is time to leave the salon!

MOHAWK VS. FAUXHAWK

Thursday, April 30, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Hey Moms and Dads, is your son ready for a cool new boys hair cut?  Summer is fast approaching and the mohawk hairstyles are in high demand! I'm gonna let my friend Chewy(who would also like to try a mohawk haircut, but his hair is too short) fill you in.....

Chewy here, just stopping by to fill all you curious moms and dads in on the  definition of this boys haircut, called a Mohawk.

* The hair is usually shaved very low all around the sides, leaving a longer strip of hair going through the center of the head from the top to the very bottom at the nape of the neck.

If your not quite ready for the mohawk hairstyle, then maybe the fauxhawk haircut is the way to go!

* The Fauxhawk is a regular haircut (short on sides and back, longer through the top) that can be spiked up in a mohawk hairstyle. The length of the haircut can vary for this hairstyle, depending on the customers preference.  Since this Fauxhawk haircut can be worn either way, you get two cool kids haircuts in one.

Moms and Dads if your still unsure and and cannot commit to either of these hairstyles, then don't worry we offer a wide variety of hairstyles for children. Just ask one of our professionally trained hairstylists for more ideas on other haircuts for kids.

Where should I go to have my childs first haircut?

Wednesday, April 1, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Deciding on the right time for your baby's first haircut can be a big challenge, but where to get that haircut doesn't have to be.

Here at Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids we specialize in making children's haircuts fun!  We have indoor playground equipment for them to play on, as well as fun cars and television for during the haircut.  We strive to make each child feel comfortable before starting the haircut, so that they have an enjoyable experience.  We have bubbles, books, and other toy items that the children can play with during the cut to help them feel at ease.  I will be honest, not all children like haircuts, but if they feel comfortable with where they are, it does make a huge difference with getting them over their fear.  Sometimes taking them to an "adult" salon makes them feel intimidated because everything is a "no-no".  Here they are free to be a kid!  They can stomp up the slide, laugh and play, and just be themselves.  In the case that they don't care for their haircut, they can cry and it will be ok!  Other parents and staff are used to this as most of us have had a similiar situation!

When the time is right for your baby's first haircut, stop by a Cookie Cutters, Haircuts For Kids location nearest you and Discover How Much Fun A Haircut Can Be!!

Boys Haircut Styles: How to tell your stylist what you want

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
I have a lot of parents who say "I know the hairstyle I what, I want I just don't know how to explain it."  This happen whether it is you baby's first haircut or you are wanting a cool new style.

When explaining they hairstyle you want to your stylist, be as specific as possible.  The stylist will work with you as you are explaining to make sure they understand what you want.  One of the most common confusions for a boys haircut between a stylist and parent, is the desired length of the style.  Short hairstyles for boys can be accomplished by using scissors or clippers.  Clippers allow the stylist to take the hair length shorter than they would have been able to only using scissors.  The stylist will make suggestions on whether to use clippers or trimmers depending on the desired style.  The same goes for long haircuts for boys, be as specific as possible on the length you want the hair left.  From there, the stylist can work with you to come up with a style that will complement the hair length.

There are also style books available in the salons that will show pictures of kids hairstyles for boys.

Baby's First Haircut Part 2

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

Thanks for checking back for Part 2.

If your child does not like to have their hair combed or washed, more than likely they will not like getting haircuts at first.  Here are a few suggestions when planning you Baby's First Haircut:

  • When going to get your child's haircut for the first time, one thing to consider is the time of day your child is in the best mood.  Getting a haircut at lunch time or nap time is not typically the best time of day, as young children tend to be a little cranky and not want to be touched.
  • Avoid planning your visit to the salon right after a doctors or dentist appointment.  It is not usually a good time unless your child likes the doctor.
  • If they like to eat a certain snack, by all means it with you for them to eat during the haircut.
  • Bring their favorite toy or we do have bubbles at some of our salons.  These can be used to help distract and entertain the child.
  • If there is a certain show on TV they love to watch, try to come when that show is on.
  • Bring an extra set of clothes.  Some children do not like to wear the cape because it feel confining and if they refuse we don't make them wear it.  The only drawback is your child will have hair on their clothes and will be itchy.  By bringing a change of clothes you can avoid an unhappy child for the car ride home.
  • If you have a long drive and your child falls asleep on drives, give them some time to wake up before having someone they don't know interacts with them.
For some children the unknown is scary and getting a haircut for the first time is an unknown.  We always try to put the smaller children in our first haircut chair because it is more enclosed and has a seat belt.  This helps them feel more secure and keeps them safe.  Just remember if you are calm and happy then that shows baby that their is nothing scary about haircuts. If you are tense and nervous baby will pick up on that.

We have designed a cool kid's salon complete with playground and fantasy chairs to help ease your child's fears.  We hope that when you visit us you will Discover How Much Fun A Haircut Can Be!

When to get Baby's First Haircut

Monday, February 9, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

Yes, it is a very hard decision.  One of the biggest questions asked seems to be, "At what age should i get my baby's first haircut?"
Waiting till age 1 is not always an option, especially if your little boy keeps getting called a girl, even when dressed all in blue.
A few questions to ask yourself are:

1. Is the hair bothering my baby? Is it bothering me?
2.  Is the hair scraggly, tangled, out of control, or always messy looking?

If the answer is Yes, then it is probably time for your baby's first haircut and these are all things we can help with.  I had a mother ask me the other day, "How does this work? Do you just do a haircut you want or what I want?"  We do what the parent wants if the child's hair will do the style.  If the hair won't, we will explain why and give alternative  suggestions.  We also have books in the salon that show pictures of kids hairstyles to help you decide.

Check back tomorrow for Part 2 of this blog.  I will discuss how to make the First Haircut a good experience.

Ballerina Knot Updo

Saturday, September 6, 2008 by Cookie Cutters Draper UT East Draper Parkway

The ballerina knot is a very simple and stylish updo for girls with long hair.  Simply pull the hair into a ponytail at the crown of the head.  Twist the ponytail in a circular motion and pin in in place.  To make it more formal, braid the ponytail before wrapping it around itself.

When should we come in for our baby's first haircut?

Thursday, August 21, 2008 by Cookie Cutters Canton MI Cherry Hill Road
Wondering when you should make an appointment for your baby's first haircut?  We suggest waiting until your baby is around one year old, unless his or her hair grows very fast and is quite long.  Here is information from Johnson's Baby:

Your baby's hair is changing. It's growing longer and thicker. His newborn hair (if he had any!) might even have been replaced by hair of a completely different color. As his hair gets longer and thicker and he begins to experiment with finger foods, you'll notice that a lot of his dinner ends up in his hair. Which makes now a perfect time for your baby's first haircut.

Try the Professionals!

Whether you choose to go to a salon or do it yourself, your baby's first haircut is a momentous occasion. If you wish to go to a hairdresser or barber, try one who specializes in cutting hair for children. He or she will know how to work quickly so your baby is in and out of the chair in as little time as possible! Although you may think your baby doesn't have enough hair to warrant a "professional" cut, there is a distinct advantage to starting early: if your baby gets used to the experience now, you may be able to avoid the potential frenzy that often accompanies toddlers' trips to the hair salon or barber.

It will help if you hold your baby in your lap. Salons often have fun, themed chairs for children as well as age-appropriate video tapes to distract your baby from the scissors snipping around his ears!

Care for Baby's Hair

Thursday, August 14, 2008 by Cookie Cutters Canton MI Cherry Hill Road
Hey moms and dads!  Does your baby have cradle cap?  Why not try these home remedies:

1.  Wash your baby's hair more often.  This will help get rid of some of the flakes.

2.  Rub your baby's head with a natural oil such as olive or almond.  Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash with a gentle shampoo.

3.  Brush your baby's hair while shampooing.  Brushing can help loosen the flakes from the scalp.

For more info on cradle cap, visit BabyCenter.  And be sure to come in to Cookie Cutters when your baby needs his or her first haircut!

Head Lice Information

Friday, May 16, 2008 by Larry Shelton

Children's hairstyles and children's haircuts are accompanied by an appearance of a little insect that makes all of us a little squeamish.  When one of our haircuts for kids salon's has a client with this little pest we hope everyone is informed of exactly what it means, and what to do.  The following FAQs may help.

Q.  What are head lice?

A.       Head lice are small six-legged wingless insects with translucent, almost gray or grayish-white bodies.  They cause itching and sores in the scalp, especially at the base of the neck.  Their white eggs, called nits, are attached to hairs and hatch in about one week.

Q.  How can I as a parent identify head lice on my child?

A.           Lice are not always visible, but nits are detectable on the hairs, most commonly on the back of the head or above the ears.  Some parents mistake dandruff for nits.  Nits are firmly attached to the hair shaft and cannot be moved along or knocked off the hair shaft with the finder.  Dandruff, on the other hand, can easily be shaken off.

Q.  How are lice transferred from person to person?

A.  Head lice are most commonly acquired by personal, head to head, contact.         They can also be transferred by contact with upholstered chairs, the use of infected combs or brushes, shared hats or headsets such as those used with cassette players.

Q.  What are some preventative steps I can take to protect my child from getting head lice?

A.  Your child should avoid sharing combs, brushes or hats with other children who may have head lice.  Once a child is treated for head lice he should no longer be contagious and may return to school

Q.  How do you treat head lice?

A.  The preferred treatment is permethrin one percent cream rinse (NIX) applied      to the hair for 10 minutes.  After rinsing the hair, a fine toothed comb should be used to remove the nits from the hair shaft.  Re-treatment may be necessary one week after the first application to kill lice that have hatched from viable nits not removed initially.  All household members who are infected must be treated at the same time.  Alternative treatments include non-prescription shampoos which also kill moth lice and nits but are probably less effective.

Q.  What are some precautions we should take to ensure it does not spread to other family members?

A.  Lice cannot live over 72 hours off the human body.  Your child’s room should be vacuumed or wet mopped during infection.  Clothing and bed linens should also be washed in very hot water.  Brushes or combs should be discarded or coated with NIX, the cream rinse, for 15 minutes and then thoroughly cleaned in boiling water.
