Cute summer hair!

Half Up, Half Down Ponytail!

This is the cutest and easiest hairstyle for summer. This is great look for long or short hairstyles. You can achieve this look by pulling the top portion of the hair into a ponytail while the bottom is left loose. Or for a different spin instead of a ponytail, secure the hair with bobbie pins. This is a great look for little girls, girls with one length hairstyles, or girls that are trying to grow out bangs. When you come into Cookie Cutters Haircuts For Kids your stylist can show you how to do this hairstyle.

Summer Is A Great Time To Grow Into a New Style!!

Friday, June 5, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Have you been wanting your child to grow out a certain hairstyle or part of their hair?  If so summer is a great time to begin!

If your daughter has bangs, but has been looking at girl hair styles that have longer or no bangs this is a great opportunity to begin working your way to the new hairstyle.  It does take a lot of patience to grow bangs out. It seems to be  easier in the summer so you don't have to worry about her not being able to see the chalk board.

A great thing to use when growing out a style is headbands.  Headbands seem to work a lot better than hair barrettes. Hair barrettes fall out easier and your child usually can't put them in by themselves.  Another tip when growing out a hair style is to keep your child's hair parted on either side never down the middle. This also makes it much easier to keep the bangs out of their eyes.

If you need help deciding what hairstyle will work best for your daughter stop by your local Cookie Cutters, Haircuts For Kids salon and ask one of our stylist for suggestions.  Also, if you have pictures of kids hairstyles you like bring them with you to help show your stylist the hairstyle you are working toward.

Tips For Keeping Hair Healty This Summer

Thursday, June 4, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Now that summer is here, your children will probably be spending a lot of time in the pool. It doesn't matter whether children have long hairstyles or short hairstyles, a girl haircut or boy hair ut, chlorine will damage the hair just the same.  Cookie Cutters Haircuts for Kids would like to give you a few reminders on how to keep your child's hair healthy and chlorine free. Remember, it is easier to prevent chlorine build up than is to get ride of it, so follow these recommendations before diving into the water.
  • Before your child hits the water be sure to spray down their hair with Circle of Friends Pre-Swim conditioner. This will coat the hair and block the chlorine from being absorbed.
  • Always shampoo hair after swimming with our Circle of Friends Swimmers shampoo. This will remove any chlorine in the hair.
  • Follow up with our Circle of Friends orange or raspberry conditioner to keep hair moisturized and prevent drying.
If your child's hair feels slimy when wet or has a green tint to it call your local Cookie Cutters Haircuts For Kids salon and make an appointment for a Malibu Treatment. This is a treatment that is put on the hair for 20-40 minutes and will strip away any chlorine build up.  It is suggested you do this at the end of summer before you get your new Back to School hairstyle.

For more healthy hair tips be sure to ask your stylist for suggestions on your next visit!

Summer Boys Haircut Equals Answer to Pesky Cowlick

Monday, June 1, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

There are many options this summer for short hairstyles for boys. A great way to keep cool in the summer is a clipper cut. It is also a great answer if you are tired of pasting down that pesky "Dennis the Menace" cowlick.

Don't be afraid this is not a burr haircut. The clippers are used on the sides, back, and even the crown just short enough so the hair can not stick up.  What makes this boys hair cut different from a burr is that clippers are not used on top. Scissors are used to blend the top in.

This short hairstyle can be worn combed straight down for a maintenance free summer haircut, worn spiky all over or with spiky bangs.

Your Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids stylist can help you determine if this is the right haircut for your son and even show you pictures of kids hairstyles that will help you have an idea of what the hairstyle will look like.

Summer Haircuts For Boys

Friday, May 29, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

Summer is a great time to get away from the typical "little" boy haircut and try a shorter version. Most moms say "I don't want it to look like a burr".  A burr haircut is a thing of the past.  There are many different versions of boys clipper cuts and at Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids your hairstylist can help you choose the style that would work best with your boys hair. We also have pictures of kids hairstyles to choose from.

If your child has never had a clipper haircut before it is a good idea to start with a longer guard and only use the clippers on the sides and back, then blend the top in using scissors. This is just a shorter version of a little boy haircut and is tapered in a little closer around the ears and on the back of the neck. This will make fine hair look thicker and thin out thick hair. It will also give you a little more time in between haircuts.

A #4 guard is typically the most common used. It will leave the hair 1/2 of an inch long. However there are many guards #1 through #8. With #1 being the shortest and #8 being the longest. It's better to start longer because you can always go back and take more off.

The top of the hair can be left as long as you want it or cut as short as you like and still be blended in.

Check back for more versions of boys clipper cuts in future blogs!

Cute Summer Styles With Braids

Thursday, May 28, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

Boho Braids

Braids are a quick, fun summer hairstyle for kids. This is a great way to open up a girls small face, tame thick hair, or give fine hair texture. It can be a great for short hairstyles or long hairstyles. This will also keep unruly hair in place

There is not a "right" way to braid girls hair. You can modify the braids to suit your hair type and style. Feel free to do as many braids as you want and play around with where you place them.

Hair can be braided wet or dry. Use small sections at your part or at the hairline. Braid to the end and secure with a clear elastic band. Tuck end of braid under other pieces of hair so the end is not visible.

How to Do A French Braid

Friday, May 15, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Are you looking for a cute hairstyle to keep your daughter's long hair pulled up and out of her face for the summer?  A french braid is a great choice.  Here are the steps to help you style your daughters hair into a french braid.  If you still have trouble getting the style completed, stop by your local Cookie Cutters Haircuts for kids salon and have one of our professionally trained stylist help.  While you are there be sure to check out our books full of pictures of kids hairstyles you can try out!

How To Do A French Braid

***A french braid can be done on dry or damp hair, but may be tighter and last longer if done on slightly damp hair.

***Begin by brushing all tangles out of hair.

***Grasp a section of hair with your fingers just above the forehead or right above the bangs that is 3 inches long and 1 inch wide.

***Divide the section into three even smaller sections.  Hold the left section between the index finger and the thumb, and let the middle section lay flat against the head.  Pull the section on the right over the middle section and put it between the left index and middle fingers.  This will start to form the braid.

***Using the right middle finger, cut a 1 inch wide section of hair straight across the head, starting at the outer hairline and moving toward the middle section.  Collect the middle section and pull the hair tight.

***Twist your left hand clockwise and move the section between your left index and middle finger to our right index and middle fingers.  Pull the sections in your right hand and let the section in your left hand go

***Using the left middle finger, cut a 1 inch wide section of hair straight across the head staring at the outer hairline and moving toward the dangling section.  Scoop up the dangling section and pull this now bigger section to the left, hooking it with your middle finger.  Be to make sure each section of your french braid is smooth and that you are holding each section tight for a uniform look to each side of the braid.

***Twist your right hand counterclockwise.  Take the left index finger and hook the section of hair between the right index and middle fingers.  Pull it to the left and let the section in our right hand fall.

***Continue the process until the entire french braid is complete.  Remember to use the index and middle fingers to hook the hair, not the thumb and index finger.

***When you reach the nape of the neck you can either time the hair there with a rubber-band or continue to braid the tail to the end and tie off then.  To dress up the style add a bow.

Style options for Boys!

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Is your son ready for a new hairy style?  At Cookie Cutters, Haircuts For Kids our stylist are up to date on the latest styles as well as the older ones!

Here are some ideas for cool hairstyles for boys!

~The classic Buzz/Crew Cut.  This haircut is done completely with clippers and can vary in length depending on your preference.  This style can have bangs left if you like that look better.

~The Ceaser cut.  Sometimes referred to as the George Clooney cut.  This style is short with lots of layers and fringy, choppy bangs.  This haircut can be done with scissors all over or with clippers used on the sides and back and scissors on top.

~The Bowl cut.  This haircut is seen mostly on babies and toddlers but definitely can be used for the bigger boys too.  This style is generally clippered on the bottom and longer on the top with a definite line going around the mid section.

~The Spiky cut.  This haircut is good for kids who like to style their hair.  The hair is left slightly longer on top and styled with gel or pomade into spikes.  This haircut can be done with just scissors or the combination of clippers and scissors.

~The long and shaggy cut.  This style is very popular right now, especially with the older boys.  This haircut is scissor cut only with a lot of texturizing done to help create the "messy" look.

Your stylist will be happy to help you decide what look would work best for your son's new, cool haircut!

Bye Bye Bangs

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

If your little girl is wanting a new style that doesn't contain bangs here are a few tips to get you through the growing process!

1.  Make sure you both understand that it is going to be a long process!
2.  Have a hair style in mind so you have something to work towards.  Does she want all one length hair?  Or does she want longer side sweeping bangs??  Look through pictures of kids hairstyles available in our salons for ideas on cute kids haircuts without bangs!
3.  You will need LOTS of hair accessories!!  Headbands will be the best thing in the beginning to keep them out of her face.  Once they get longer you will be able to use barrettes and clips more frequently.
4.  Be sure to ask your stylist for styling tips while growing bangs out; we are here to help make the process easier for you!
5.  Even though you are growing them out they will still need the ends trimmed to keep them looking pretty.

Keep in mind that depending on the age of the child this may be a hard task to complete as little ones frequently do not care for things to be in their hair.

How to discribe your little boys haircut

Monday, February 23, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
When talking with parents before starting a haircut, I ask them to explain the type of haircut they are wanting.  A lot of parents respond with, "I know the haircut I want, I just don't know how to explain it."  Hopefully the explanation below will help you on your next visit.

One of the most popular boy haircuts today is the fade.  The "fade" is really just a catchall phrase for a short boys haircut done with clippers.  A "fade" can be clippers used all over the head or just on the sides and back, with scissors used on the top to blend.  What you really need is to know when asking for a "fade" is how short you want to go and if you want to be able style the top.  I have listed below the clipper guard lengths available to use and how long they will leave the hair after the cut.
  • No Clipper Guard - This is a bald fade, no clipper guard is used and the hair is cut down to the scalp.
  • #1 guard  - Leaves the hair 1/8" long or stubble.  With this length children with light colored hair tend to look bald.
  • #2 guard - Leaves the hair 1/4" long.
  • #3 guard - Leaves the hair 3/8" long and starts to look a little shaved.
  • #4 guard - This is shorter version of little boy haircut.
You will also need to explain how long you would like the top of the haircut to be styled. Cutting with scissors will give you a few different style options for the haircut.  It can be a shorter version of a little boy haircut or a messy, spike look when you use a gel or pomade.  If you want an all over short cut you can use the clippers on top also.  Cutting the top with clippers will make the hairstyle low maintenance, which is nice for those boys who don't like to mess with their hair.

We hope this helps you the next time you are trying to explain the haircut you are wanting your son to have.  Also, remember that we do have pictures of kids hairstyles available for you to look at in every salon.

Boys Haircut Styles: How to tell your stylist what you want

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
I have a lot of parents who say "I know the hairstyle I what, I want I just don't know how to explain it."  This happen whether it is you baby's first haircut or you are wanting a cool new style.

When explaining they hairstyle you want to your stylist, be as specific as possible.  The stylist will work with you as you are explaining to make sure they understand what you want.  One of the most common confusions for a boys haircut between a stylist and parent, is the desired length of the style.  Short hairstyles for boys can be accomplished by using scissors or clippers.  Clippers allow the stylist to take the hair length shorter than they would have been able to only using scissors.  The stylist will make suggestions on whether to use clippers or trimmers depending on the desired style.  The same goes for long haircuts for boys, be as specific as possible on the length you want the hair left.  From there, the stylist can work with you to come up with a style that will complement the hair length.

There are also style books available in the salons that will show pictures of kids hairstyles for boys.

When to get Baby's First Haircut

Monday, February 9, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

Yes, it is a very hard decision.  One of the biggest questions asked seems to be, "At what age should i get my baby's first haircut?"
Waiting till age 1 is not always an option, especially if your little boy keeps getting called a girl, even when dressed all in blue.
A few questions to ask yourself are:

1. Is the hair bothering my baby? Is it bothering me?
2.  Is the hair scraggly, tangled, out of control, or always messy looking?

If the answer is Yes, then it is probably time for your baby's first haircut and these are all things we can help with.  I had a mother ask me the other day, "How does this work? Do you just do a haircut you want or what I want?"  We do what the parent wants if the child's hair will do the style.  If the hair won't, we will explain why and give alternative  suggestions.  We also have books in the salon that show pictures of kids hairstyles to help you decide.

Check back tomorrow for Part 2 of this blog.  I will discuss how to make the First Haircut a good experience.

The Bun

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 by Cookie Cutters South Jordan UT District Main

The bun is a simply and easy hairstyle for girls who want to keep their hair out of their face but still look pretty.  The hair is pulled back from the face, secured in place, twisted or braided and coiled in a circle.  The bun can be held in place with fancy barrettes or bobby pins.  Lots of girls wear this style while dancing.

Remember, wearing a bun too tight can cause headaches, so be careful!  Make an appointment at Cookie Cutters and our stylists can give you more tips on keeping buns in place!  See you soon!

Blunt Bangs

Saturday, August 30, 2008 by Cookie Cutters Sylvania OH Central Avenue

Straight, blunt bangs are a simple look that works with many face shapes.  Wider foreheads can be framed to look smaller and square jawlines can be evened out using straight bangs.  Kids with straight hair often look very nice with a straight bang cut just above the brow line.

Remember, Cookie Cutters is your local source for this and more cute hairstyles for kids!
