Try Long Layers For Girls!

Thursday, July 2, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Want a new look for your daughters long hairstyles?
Try adding long layers!

Long layers are great for long hairstyles and even some short haircuts. Long layers add body to fine hair, thin out thick hair, and help eliminate tangles, especially during the summer, when it is harder to comb through one length hair. If your daughters hair is wavy or somewhat curly the curls can be weighed down by one length hair. Putting a long layer in the back will take some of the weight off and make the curl bounce back. This will also eliminate any fuzziness in the back of the hair. So ask your stylist at Cookie Cutters Haircuts For Kids if this style is recommended for your daughter. Discover how much fun a haircut can be!

Shirley Temple Manicures and Mock Shave Fun!

Thursday, June 18, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
At Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for kids we understand at times parents want to do something extra special for their children.  For that reason we offer more than just childrens haircuts.  Along with our standard haircuts, bang trims, and styles, we also offer Shirley Temple Manicures and Mock Shaves!  A Shirley Temple Manicure is a child's version of a manicure.  The child will get their old polish removed, nails filed and painted, and they will also receive a ring!  Little girl's love this service, mostly because it makes them feel "grown up".  For the little boys we have the Mock Shave.  The child will sit in a fantasy chair and receive a "shave" just like daddy does!  The stylist will apply shave cream to the face and with a tongue depressor pretend to shave all the hair from the child's face. Your son will also receive a fake tattoo with this service.  Both of these services are a great treat after getting a cool kids haircut or even  if you are just looking for some rainy day fun. So head in to your Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids hair salon where you will Discover How Much Fun A Haircut Can Be!!!

Buzz Cut For A Cool Summer Style

Tuesday, June 2, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
To buzz or not to buzz

If your son plays a lot of sports, sweats a lot, has thick hair, or just does not like to comb his hair then a buzz cut hairstyle is the answer.

There are still many style choices even with short hairstyles.

It can be buzzed the same length on the sides and back as it is on top.  It can be faded shorter on the sides and back and left longer on top.  You can choose to buzz all off the bang area or leave some bangs to spike up or comb straight down.  The bangs can be cut short with scissors so that they blend in, this keeps you from getting the buzzed off look and is still maintenance free.

Once you decide on short haircuts for the summer, you will wish you had done it a long time ago.

If you are still having trouble deciding what boys hair cut would be best for your son, stop by your local Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids and ask your stylist for help.

Summer Haircuts For Boys

Friday, May 29, 2009 by Stylist Blogger

Summer is a great time to get away from the typical "little" boy haircut and try a shorter version. Most moms say "I don't want it to look like a burr".  A burr haircut is a thing of the past.  There are many different versions of boys clipper cuts and at Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids your hairstylist can help you choose the style that would work best with your boys hair. We also have pictures of kids hairstyles to choose from.

If your child has never had a clipper haircut before it is a good idea to start with a longer guard and only use the clippers on the sides and back, then blend the top in using scissors. This is just a shorter version of a little boy haircut and is tapered in a little closer around the ears and on the back of the neck. This will make fine hair look thicker and thin out thick hair. It will also give you a little more time in between haircuts.

A #4 guard is typically the most common used. It will leave the hair 1/2 of an inch long. However there are many guards #1 through #8. With #1 being the shortest and #8 being the longest. It's better to start longer because you can always go back and take more off.

The top of the hair can be left as long as you want it or cut as short as you like and still be blended in.

Check back for more versions of boys clipper cuts in future blogs!

MOHAWK VS. FAUXHAWK

Thursday, April 30, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
Hey Moms and Dads, is your son ready for a cool new boys hair cut?  Summer is fast approaching and the mohawk hairstyles are in high demand! I'm gonna let my friend Chewy(who would also like to try a mohawk haircut, but his hair is too short) fill you in.....

Chewy here, just stopping by to fill all you curious moms and dads in on the  definition of this boys haircut, called a Mohawk.

* The hair is usually shaved very low all around the sides, leaving a longer strip of hair going through the center of the head from the top to the very bottom at the nape of the neck.

If your not quite ready for the mohawk hairstyle, then maybe the fauxhawk haircut is the way to go!

* The Fauxhawk is a regular haircut (short on sides and back, longer through the top) that can be spiked up in a mohawk hairstyle. The length of the haircut can vary for this hairstyle, depending on the customers preference.  Since this Fauxhawk haircut can be worn either way, you get two cool kids haircuts in one.

Moms and Dads if your still unsure and and cannot commit to either of these hairstyles, then don't worry we offer a wide variety of hairstyles for children. Just ask one of our professionally trained hairstylists for more ideas on other haircuts for kids.

How to discribe your little boys haircut

Monday, February 23, 2009 by Stylist Blogger
When talking with parents before starting a haircut, I ask them to explain the type of haircut they are wanting.  A lot of parents respond with, "I know the haircut I want, I just don't know how to explain it."  Hopefully the explanation below will help you on your next visit.

One of the most popular boy haircuts today is the fade.  The "fade" is really just a catchall phrase for a short boys haircut done with clippers.  A "fade" can be clippers used all over the head or just on the sides and back, with scissors used on the top to blend.  What you really need is to know when asking for a "fade" is how short you want to go and if you want to be able style the top.  I have listed below the clipper guard lengths available to use and how long they will leave the hair after the cut.
  • No Clipper Guard - This is a bald fade, no clipper guard is used and the hair is cut down to the scalp.
  • #1 guard  - Leaves the hair 1/8" long or stubble.  With this length children with light colored hair tend to look bald.
  • #2 guard - Leaves the hair 1/4" long.
  • #3 guard - Leaves the hair 3/8" long and starts to look a little shaved.
  • #4 guard - This is shorter version of little boy haircut.
You will also need to explain how long you would like the top of the haircut to be styled. Cutting with scissors will give you a few different style options for the haircut.  It can be a shorter version of a little boy haircut or a messy, spike look when you use a gel or pomade.  If you want an all over short cut you can use the clippers on top also.  Cutting the top with clippers will make the hairstyle low maintenance, which is nice for those boys who don't like to mess with their hair.

We hope this helps you the next time you are trying to explain the haircut you are wanting your son to have.  Also, remember that we do have pictures of kids hairstyles available for you to look at in every salon.

The Flattop

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 by Cookie Cutters South Jordan UT District Main

A flattop is a type of very short hairstyle similar to the crew cut, with the exception that the hair on the top of the head is deliberately styled to stand up (typically no more than an inch or two) and is cut to be flat, resulting in a haircut that is square in shape.

In the mid-1950's, the flattop was the most popular men's hairstyle in the United States.  Many of the US astronauts, past and present, have worn flattops. Gus Grissom was a classic. In "Come Together", the Beatles mentioned the hairstyle and its link to social conservatism.

Because the haircut is so short and quickly grows out of its precisely-cut shape, maintenance haircuts are required at least every few weeks, and many flattop wearers get haircuts as often as once a week.

If your son would like to try out a flattop, make an appointment at Cookie Cutters, Haircuts for Kids!

The Fauxhawk

Saturday, August 23, 2008 by Cookie Cutters Indy Raceway Road

Hey kids!  Want a new hairstyle for school this year?  Try a faux-hawk!

The fauxhawk (or faux-hawk) hairstyle is an approximation of a Mohawk, made without shaving or buzzing the hair on the sides of the head, allowing an imitation of the look of a true mohawk without having to commit to removing most of one's hair.  In many cases, the look can be temporarily set aside by simply combing or restyling the hair. The name is a portmanteau of faux (the French word for false) and mohawk. The fauxhawk was popularised by football (soccer) star David Beckham. The fauxhawk is typically worn with a small but noticeable spike in the middle, though usually considerably shorter than many traditional mohawks. Because a fauxhawk does not involve shaving the head, most, if not all, of the hair will be gelled upward.

1. Grab a styling gel and put it on the sides of your hair evenly using your palms. Be sure to choose a strong styling gel or a product to keep your faux-hawk nicely placed throughout the day.

2. Use your hands to start shaping the faux-hawk. You need to make it stand up straight, do this by pulling from the roots upwards. If you find your hair is not strong enough to stand up, help it with the use of a hair iron or a blow dryer. Be careful in this step to avoid damaging your hair.

3. Time to finish it up! Use a strong hold hairspray to give it the final touch. Choose a hairspray suitable for your hair type.

Your local Cookie Cutters stylists can give you this hairstyle and more!  Hope to see you soon!

Chewy Celebrates the 4th of July

Monday, July 7, 2008 by Larry Shelton

Hey Kids!  Chewy here, just back from celebrating the 4th of July with Cookie and Lady.  We had a great time watching the fireworks, but we did get lots of mosquito bites!  Did you know that it is only the female mosquito that bites?  Anyway, as we were out and about on the 4th, we saw lots of kids who were in need of cool haircuts.  I stopped to tell them about Cookie Cutters and encourage them to come in for a kid's cut.  Summer is a great time to try that short haircut you've always wanted!
